After a tough loss away from home on the opening weekend of the League , Burry Port Ladies were much more comfortable in the second round, both on and off the field, as they hosted visitors Taffs Well. The Ladies fought out a tough contest to earn themselves a 29 – 5 bonus point victory.
The game started really well for Burry after early dominance in the scrum led to a penalty, and scrum half Keely Evans’ experience shone through as she took a quick tap and raced her way inbetween two defenders to score the opening try. About ten minutes later, Evans got her second try of the game, as some good running rugby from the backs got them just outside of Taffs Wells 22. A solid carry down the blindside by Captain Llinos Rees almost resulted in a try but was held up due to some good defending. From the resulting scrum, the ball spread wide to just underneath the posts where Taffs Well were found guilty of going in off their feet. Keely Evans again took a quick tap and go, and bundled over, converted by Hannah Stiles.
Burry Port’s third try of the game went to full back Mari Jenkins after some good running rugby from the backs, led to the full back running a great angle to receive the ball, and her pace was far too much, as she raced in under the posts. Hannah stiles kicked her second conversion of the game to take the score to 19 – 0 to the home team.
Not long before half time, Burry Port’s back of the match, Keely Evans, rounded off a hattrick of tries after some good tackling in midfield led to some great work by the forwards who turned the ball over, and Evans, sold the dummy to the Taffs Well defenders, to race over with ease, even celebrating as she ran it in.
After the break, Taffs Well were a different team and held out a lot of pressure from Burry Port early on. After a mistake, Taffs Well were camped in the Burry Port half and this resulted in some hard ball carrying and some nice passing moves. Burry were holding them out quite well, with some excellent tackling near their own try line, but in the end, Taffs Well found themselves on the scoresheet after a lot of hard work.
Possesion of the ball switched from side to side in the middle of the park, for quite some time, but then Burry Ports openside flanker Catrina Bowen, who was also forward of the match, received the ball and found a big gap in the tired defencive line, to race over for what was a well deserved try.
This was an excellent display of rugby from Burry Ladies, with plenty of positives to take into next weekends clash with Bonymaen away.
Well Done to all involved!
