Lady Blacks victorious over Morriston
After a tough loss on the road to Bonymaen in round 3, Burry Port Ladies took full advantage of the league break to recover and prepare for one of the most anticipated games of the season, against nearest league rivals Morriston.
The match was close to being called off, as the referee who was initially selected to take charge was a no-show, however the management team were able to sort it out quickly, and another referee was glad to step in. spectators and coaches were pleased, as it turned out to be a great match for the ladies.
The game started very well for Burry Port, who dominated the early exchanges, making some big tackles, turning over a lot of ball and playing an expansive game. However the game was scoreless for the opening quarter due to some good defence from Morriston who absorbed everything that Burry Port threw at them. The opening score of the game came at about the 20 minute mark, after some great back play saw the ball worked out wide and winger Alanah Powell almost raced in, but just had a foot cross the touch line. This led to a pretty scrappy lineout which was won by the home team. After a couple of phases, the ball was quickly recycled and passed just inside to captain Llinos Rees who then stormed through a big defensive gap to claim her teams opener.
The second of Burry Ports trys went to Outside half Rhian Jenkins not long after, as she found a gap in the defence and was able to glide through and run in unopposed. Jenkins also got the teams 3rd try, in very similar fashion, which took the scoreline to 15 – 0. The all important bonus point try came moments before half time, this time round however, Jenkins was made to work a little harder as she picked up a ball that was hacked through from a ruck, to then sidestep an oncoming defender, and reach out to score her 3rd after being stopped just short of the line.
The second half was a tighter affair, as the Morriston team tightened their defence and held out the home team for quite some time. The fifth try of the match was scored after captain Llinos Rees received the ball from the breakdown on the visiting teams 22 metre line, to then go on a barnstorming run and proved to difficult to bring down to round off a brace of tries. After a successful conversion, this took the score to 27 – 0
The home teams final score was a well worked effort. The ball was spread to outside centre Mari Jenkins, who then danced her way through the tired Morriston defence to score out wide.
For the last 5 minutes of the game, Burry Port found themselves camped on their own try line holding out the visitors onslaught time and time again, showing some excellent defensive skills and great teamwork. An excellent lineout move then saw Morriston cross over in the corner for their first, and fully deserved try. The difficult conversion came close to being a good one, but just dipped under the crossbar to see the game end with the final score being 32 – 5 to Burry Port
Ladies team coach Gareth Gravell said he was extremely proud of the team as this was possibly their best performance of the season so far, and the improvements are clear to see, as the team are getting better and better each week. This victory sees them climb up the division 3 table, to 3rd place.
The ladies next league fixture is on Sunday 16th October as they make the journey up to Merthyr Ladies for a 2.30pm kick off, followed by their next home game against Deri Ladies RFC on the 30th October. Your support would be greatly appreciated!
