Del Protheroe
It is with great sadness that we at Burry Port RFC learned of the passing of Del Protheroe on 17th April 2023. Del started his playing career with Llanelli Youth and played alongside his school friend Gareth Jenkins the former Scarlets Player, Coach and Wales Coach who also has strong connections with Burry Port. Del continued his rugby progress and followed his elder Brother David (Dai Bando, a Centre/wing three-quarter) to play for Burry Port RFC and quickly established themselves in the First XV. Del cemented his position in a very competitive back row and was part of a formidable pack where he built a reputation over his career as a fit, uncompromising, and skillful back row forward. He was well respected by his teammates and developed into an excellent No 8.
He played for Burry Port RFC against several of the top 16 First Class sides in the W.R.U. Challenge Cup,
they included 1972 Bridgend, 1974 Newport, 1975 Newport, 1975 Penarth.
Del played in the successful team squad that won the Gwendraeth Valley Cup in 1972/3 and won Section A of the West Wales Rugby Union in 1974/5.
After his playing career Del went on to coach the First XV and gained the respect of a younger generation of players. In 1997 at the WRU District “G” Awards Dinner Del received the award of “Clubman of the Year” The W. Ken Jones Cup.
Del was also a former Chairman of Burry Port RFC and together with his wife Rena also carried out the role of Club Steward / Stewardess.
Later life saw a move to warmer climates followed by a return home when Del battled bravely against illness. Del will always be remembered by his teammates and friends at Burry Port RFC as a gifted player on the field, and a true club man off it, but he is probably best remembered for being one half of the inseparable couple, ‘Del and Rena’ who are now reunited again. Our thoughts are with Del’s family at this sad time.
Funeral arrangements. Llanelli Crematorium 4pm Wednesday 10th May.
As a mark of respect to Del and his strong connection to Burry Port RFC we will hold a minute silence prior to our next home game v Loughor KO at 2.30 pm Saturday 29th April.
