As a club we are sad to hear of the passing of another former player & loyal servant of our club, Mr Jonah Phillip.. Jonah was a Burry Port boy through & through & made his debut for the seniors during the 1949-50 season - the first year when rugby was played at the Memorial Park, the same pitch that our club uses to this day. He was a strong running full back and a fierce tackler who perfected the 'Jacknife tackle' during his playing days. His skills were noted whilst serving in the Army & played for the British Army against Fiji after the Second World War. Jonah played for his village team until he was snapped up by the Llanelli Scarlets in 1956 & played there for 4 seasons sharing the no 15 jersey with British & Irish Lion Terry Davies and undertook the goal kicking duties for both clubs. Jonah had to retire from rugby due to the sudden death of his father & the need to provide for his mother & brothers & sisters - but his contribution off the field carried on as he was one of a number of volunteers who built a new clubhouse for 'The Blacks' between 1962 & 1964 - the same clubhouse we call home today. This is testament to his skills as a builder & carpenter. He was proud that both his boys played junior & senior rugby for his village team & that his grandsons also donned 'The Blacks' jersey. The next generation - Jonah's great grandsons - are next in line to keep the family tradition going. Our thoughts are with Audrey, Ian & Keri and their families.Jonah's funeral will be held at Llanelli Crematorium on Thurs 30th June at 1pm. Cysgwch yn dawel
