Burry Port V Betws

Burry Port 10 – 6 Betws
The opening match of a brand new season took place at the Memorial Park Burry Port in cloudy conditions. Betws travelling form the Amman Valley were no mugs and came to spoil the party as both teams adjusted to the new laws, and the interpretation of the ref. It started well for Burry Port who were much more positive with ball in hand and the Blacks looked to unleash their exciting back division, however the game was dominated by the whistle blower who penalised the attacking team far too often. The new rules will take a while to get used to by players and referees alike, and when applied correctly, will allow a faster and more dynamic game. Despite the stop start nature of the game Burry Port scored first with Number 8 Richard Parker scoring a fine try after quick thinking and a tap and go from Ben Williams. Ben Williams converted. Betws scored two penalties and Williams struck one back to make the half time score 10 – 6. The second half produced a good work ethic from the Blacks but they were not allowed to build up the phases with the ref favouring the defending team. No wonder the second half saw no points, but it wasn’t without its efforts. The Blacks have trained hard in pre-season and with continuity and phased play they hoped to break down a stubborn Betws defence, sadly the ball in play time was low, and with the Blacks dominating the scrum it was disappointing to end the game on such a low score line. Openside flanker Tom Rees was awarded man of the match for his tireless running, whilst coach Gareth Gravell can be happy in the fact it was a victory but will expect an improvement next week when they take the short trip to Llanelli to play New Dock Stars.
