The Blacks ease into Round 2

The Blacks were on WRU Bowl Duty on the weekend with a 1st Round encounter against Birchgrove RFC.

With a sizable crowd behind the Home side, Burry Port got off to a great start and with referee Chris Williams laying the law down from the offset, particularly at the breakdown everyone knew to expect a fast and open game.  Burry Port scored two early tries from good lineout work from the pack and were up 14 - 0 in the first 5 minutes, however Birchgrove did hit back in their first meaningful attack and scored a well worked try in the corner and scored another one soon after to reduce the deficit to 14-10.  After the early exchanges it was evident to see the Blacks wanted to get the ball wide at every opportunity where as Birchgrove were keen to use their forwards off 9 and keep the ball tight.  The rest of the half seen Burry Port play some breath taking rugby at times with forwards and backs combing to score some wonderful tries to extend the lead to 35 - 10. Birchgrove did manage another score themselves with some hard drives by a very decent pack to reduce the score 35-17 by half time.

The Second half got under way and Burry Port wasted no time getting back into thier stride, again spreading the ball wide and being direct when needed, the lineout was operating smoothly and the pack just edged a well competed scrum battle, Player coach Ceiron Thomas directed things superbly from outside half and give plenty of ball to the outside backs who looked dangerous everytime they had the ball. Young front rowers Ben Edwards and Declan Jordan put in a mighty shift along with the rest of the pack.

With Burry Port seemingly able to score tries at will the lead streched to 61 - 17 including a hattrick from Winger Adam Davies, a brace each for Skipper Andy Francis and Blindside flanker Rich Parker as well as a try a piece from Ashley Phillips and Stef Powell.

To Birchgrove's credit the scoreline didnt give them enough justice, they competed in many areas of the game and have a pack that will trouble most teams this season but on the day just couldnt cope with the pace and power of the Burry Port XV.

With the game won and both teams making a host of replacements Birchgrove took advantage from Burry Port taking the foot of the gas to score two late tries from close range to finsh the game with a score line of 61 - 27.

Burry Port Coach Gareth Gravell was really impressed with the teams preformance and now has a real headache about selection for next weeks Home game v Llandybie in the league.
