In cold conditions, the scene was set for a fantastic game of rugby as Burry Port played host to Wrexham RFC in the last 16 round of the WRU bowl competition. The Memorial Park saw its biggest crowd of the season so far, as the visitors from north Wales brought a good number of supporters with them.
Being the current holders of the trophy, Burry Port were keen to start the match with a bang and they did so in style. About 5 minutes into the game outside half Steff Powell received the ball from a ruck just outside the visitors 22 and showed good vision and skill as he produced a beautifully measured cross field kick to winger Luke Rudall who gathered and scored in the corner.
The Blacks kept the pressure on the Wrexham defence almost immediately from the restart and ran some great angles only to be denied by some good tackling. Eventually blacks prop Matthew Gower ran at full pace as he received a quick ball from the base of a ruck to power his way over, almost bringing the goalposts down in the process. The conversion was added by scrum half Ben Williams.
The third try of the match was a result of a great kick downfield from a penalty which Burry Port gathered at a lineout and after a couple of quick phases, Oliver Dunleavy proved to be unstoppable as he ran over to score with the extra 2 being added by Ben Williams
The final try of the half was certainly a special one which saw forwards playing like backs as they made their way down field, showing some good passing and offloading skill which was rounded off in the corner by blacks hooker Iwan Roberts. The conversion just went wide but just before half time, scrum half Ben Williams kicked a penalty after Wrexham were caught holding on to the ball on the floor.
The second half started with Wrexham surging downfield after some good carries by the forwards but were unable to score as the blacks defence held strong. After a penalty Burry Port were able to kick for touch in the visitors half and some good passing play and excellent footwork by centre Tom Bowen, he was able to cross the whitewash out wide.
The next score of the game came from the boot of Ben Williams as he kicked another penalty.
After a period of both teams being camped in midfield and testing each others defences, Burry Port threw together a great bit of passing and offloading and outside half Steff Powell finished it off in the corner. The conversion again went just wide of the uprights.
The final try of the game went to home team inside centre Duane Evans who ran a great angle near the visitors line to score almost at ease, as the Wrexham defence found him to hard to bring down. The conversion was added by Ben Williams to make the final score of the game Burry Port 47 – 0 Wrexham.
Burry Port management were extremely pleased with how the squad went about the game and were particularly pleased to see the blacks show good discipline and a good variety of skills to carry them into the quarter finals of the Bowl.
