Lady Blacks power through Bont Challenge

The lady blacks played host to Pontarddulais on Sunday afternoon in a friendly fixture, as part of their preparations for the second half of the league, which starts back in January.

The match was a scrappy affair in the opening ten minutes with both sides plugging away nicely but spilling the ball also. The home side were keen to kick on with their game plan and it didn't take long for them to settle down. The first score of the game went to Burry Port 2nd row Roxy Perego who received the ball out wide and ran in at the corner, showing good strength as she carried the Bont defender with her.

Burry Port then kept the pressure on the Pontarddulais team from the restart , and a couple of minutes later after some brilliant passing and offloading, home team full back Alanah Powell received the ball from debutant wing Sarah Thomas to cross out wide.

Bont showed some good determination in the midfield and surprised the home team after their centre ran a great angle and was able to show her heels as she ran in unopposed to make the score 10 – 5.

Burry Port responded rather quickly and after being held up on the Bont try line they were awarded a scrum and it was quite possible the most dominant scrum of the match. The home side completely pushed the visitors off the ball and loosehead prop Kelly Gravell was able to fall on the ball to get the teams 3rd try of the afternoon.

The final score of the half went to centre and player of the match Jenna Marshall who received the ball near the half way line, and showed determination and good strength as she fended off two defenders on her way to the line. The try was successfully converted by captain Llinos Rees to make the half time score 22 – 5 to the home side.

The second half was a much tighter encounter and both sides were camped in the middle of the field for long periods of time, and both teams also threatened the line on occasions. After some hard ball carrying and good offloading, Burry Port captain Llinos Rees found her way to the line which was succesfully converted by scrum half Keely Evans.

The final try of the game went to the lady blacks outside centre Catrina Bowen who demonstrated an excellent sidestep and acceleration to race over under the posts which was again converted by Keely Evans to make the final score Burry Port 36 – 5 Pontarddulais Ladies.

The Burry Port ladies management were very pleased with how the team played, especially the pack who were very dominant in the scrums, which gave a solid platform for the backs to work with.
