On Sunday, November 20th Burry Port Ladies were back in action in a friendly fixture against hosts Tumble Ladies RFC in their first ever game. This fixture was arranged to help Tumble gain some experience in their preparations for entering the league, as well as Burry Ports preparations ahead of their next upcoming league game in January.
On a very weathered pitch, the Lady Blacks started the game extremely well and it didn't take long for the first score of the game. After some good carrying, outside half Betsan Ellis-Williams received the ball and outpaced an opposing defender to score her first try of the game.
About 5 minutes later, flanker Catrina Bowen sliced through a gap in midfield and raced over for the 2nd try of the match. Soon after, outside half Betsan Ellis-Williams got her second of the game which was very similar to her first.
There were further scores from scrum half Keely Evans who paced her way to the line, Alana Borthwick who peeled off a rolling maul to score in the corner and loosehead prop Kelly Gravell who powered her way over, to make the half time score Tumble 0 – 30 Burry Port.
The first score of the second half went to Burry Port second row Roxanne Perego who had the speed and power to go outside a defender and score in the corner.
Fran Corner who was playing for the Lady Blacks on permit showed some good strength and determination to get her name on the scoresheet after picking up a loose ball and driving her way over the line.
Burry Port tighthead prop Amber Phillips was the next to get over the line. After receiving the ball just inside the Tumble 22, she made a powerful run through the defence, and then ploughed her way over out wide.
Player of the match Keely Evans closed the game out, scoring 2 tries late on to round off a hatrick and a fine performance from herself.
The match ended with the scoreline Tumble 0 – 55 Burry Port. The Lady Blacks management were very happy with the way the team played and even more so at their defence which was tested at many times throughout the game.
