1st XV BONUS POINT WIN

Despite a number of players being unavailable The Blacks headed to Penybanc with optimism in their SWALEC Division 3West B league fixture. With near perfect conditions the early exchanges were fast and fluid with Penybanc halfbacks looking to raise the tempo and create good field position. The Blacks, with a lighter pack, held their own in the early scrums and exerted pressure as the game opened up. Penybanc were penalised after good work from Centre partnership Duane Evans and Steff Roberts, with Scrum Half Ben Williams slotting over the penalty to open the scoring.
Penybanc, who were contenders for the title last season and unbeaten in the league so far this season, showed ambition and exploited the blind side to create an overlap for their left winger to race over for a well taken try. The try went unconverted, but the Blacks rallied and started to hold the ball with Adam Rudall making a clear brake and feeding Darren Daniels to score under the posts. Williams converted. The Blacks looked in control of the contact area and with tough as old boots veteran tight head Paul Silva complimenting the abrasive Iwan Roberts at Hooker and Mathew Gower at Loose Head, the front row unit were starting to dominate their bigger opponents at the scrum. With a few chances going begging the half time whistle sounded with the Blacks looking much the fitter team.
Half Time Penybanc 5-10 Burry Port.
The second half saw Burry Port go up through the gears and Luke Rudall looked dangerous with a number of kick returns resulting in a scrambling home defence. The Blacks were awarded a couple of penalties due one of which hit the post and another effort successful from the boot of Williams. A charge up field by Richard Parker linking in with Oli Dunleavy set up good field position and after a number of breakdowns Scrum Half Ben Williams went through a huge gap to score under the posts. He converted to make the score 5-20. Penybanc hit back after pressure on the Burry Port line and their openside flanker crashed over for a converted try. Raising the tempo, the Blacks were now creating many try scoring opportunities and if their handing was sharper would have scored many more tries, however it was winger Owen Thomas who finished off a fine handling movement in the corner. Luke Rudall followed this with a fine individual try for Williams to convert to make it a well deserved 12-32 bonus point victory. Coach Gareth Gravell can be pleased with the result with scrum and line out going well at forward, complimenting the exciting running of the backs. It is clear that this squad has huge potential and the inclusion of a few old heads up front has galvanised the team making it a much more street wise unit. Gareth will be looking for intensive training sessions leading up to the SWALEC Bowl match with Glais at the Memorial Park on Saturday.
