NARROW WIN FOR THE BLACKS

Blacks claim points in away win to climb table. In the only game of the day in Division 3 West B, Burry Port travelled to Llandeilo for an early kick off before the Wales v Georgia International. The first half started well with the Blacks looking to play with tempo and width, and there were many opportunities created in difficult conditions. Burry Port went ahead when a good drive from number 8 Dylan Evans created havoc in the Llandeilo defence and a clever offload to open-side flanker Tom Rees saw him slice through for a well worked try. Llandeilo were next to score and took their chance well to draw level after a defensive slip, and the game was tied at 5 all. In fairness, Burry Port, had much of the first half and there were other try scoring opportunities with Hooker Tony Millington crossing the line only for the try to be disallowed. Winger Adam Davies was also denied a try when he was adjudged to have put a foot in touch on his way to the try-line, and a stray pass to Miles Bishop cost him a certain try right in front of the posts. With all the opportunities created Burry Port had to settle for a penalty kick from Ben Williams, to turn around at half time with a lead of 8-5.
The second half saw Llandeilo play a territorial game and much of the opening stages of the second half was spent in the Burry Port 22. Burry Port has a solid set piece and as time went on became dominant at the scrum. With a slippery ball Burry Port had to settle for a more conservative tactic of putting the ball downfield and with territorial parity the Blacks were able to stretch the Llandeilo defence and create pressure on the home try line. The contact area was well contested with both back rows effective in defence and this resulted in many attacking plays being halted with a turn-over. With both teams giving plenty of effort the second half remained scoreless ending with Burry Port being camped on the Llandeilo line for the last 10 minutes. The final play of the game saw Ben Williams miss a penalty kick but as the ref blew his whistle there was a sense of relief for Burry Port but also frustration given the first half try scoring opportunities.
Coach Gareth Gravell said ‘it was a bit frustrating for us but we came away with a win and created good chances especially in the first half. Our scrum went well in the second half and better decision making saw us end the match in control. There’s plenty of room for improvement, but I’m pleased with the way the boys responded.’
The Blacks are up to 3rd spot a point behind Nantgaredig, and 5 points behind leaders Bynea but with a game in hand. Burry Port expect a big crowd at the Memorial Park for their much anticipated next league match against promotion rivals Nantgaredig on Saturday 9th December.
