Lady Blacks bury Bonymaen

On Sunday the 22nd April, the Burry Port Lady Blacks welcomed league rivals Bonymaen to the memorial park knowing that nothing less than a bonus point victory, while stopping Bony from gathering any points would do in their hunt for the WRU Ladies Division 1 B championship.

After some early rainfall the clouds disappeared and the sun shone through, which allowed for a very skillful, exciting game of rugby.  Early in the first half, the Lady Blacks retained possession of the ball well and worked their way in to the Bonymaen twenty two. A few good phases later home side centre Mari Jenkins ran a fantastic angle on to the ball as she carved through the defence to score just wide of the posts. Hannah Stiles calmly slotted the extras to make the score 7 – 0.

After showing some more dominance at scrum time and at the breakdown Burry Port found themselves playing most of their rugby inside of the Bonymaen half. All of the pressure eventually paid off as outside half Rhian Jenkins proved to be to pacey as she burst through a gap in the defence to score under the posts, with the conversion once again being added by 2nd row Stiles.

About half an hour into the first half Bonymaen pieced together some good phases of play and were able to charge their way up field, threatening the home sides try line. Some very good defence from the Lady Blacks was eventually broken as Bony used their powerful forwards to drive over the line and get their first score of the game out wide, to make the score Burry Port 14 – 5 Bonymaen.

After the blacks were awarded a penalty from a powerful scrum scrum half Keely Evans was quick out of the blocks and released the backs out wide who showed some lovely handling and offloading skills as they stormed up the field to once again threaten the Bonymaen try line, however were tackled in to touch. After Bony failed to clear the ball off the park, full back Eleri Williams gathered the kick and charged into the attacking line bringing the pacey backs to life. After some lovely play, the ball was spread out wide and winger Sam Jones crossed for the Lady Blacks 3rd try of the game with the conversion going just wide.

HALF TIME: Burry Port 19 – 5 Bonymaen

It was Bonymaen who got the first score of the second half after some impressive carries through the heart of the Burry Port defensive line lead to another try scored in similar fashion  to their first, to take the score to 19 – 10.

Shortly after Burry Port were back on the score sheet with the all-important bonus point try thanks to some more brilliant play by the farwards to turn the ball over in bonymaen’s half which yet again led to the backs showing some great skills which was finished by centre Mari Jenkins with the conversion again going agonizingly wide.

After giving away a penalty in their own twenty two for a high tackle, captain Catrina Bowen opted for a shot at goal, knowing that a Bonymaen bonus point of any sort was to be avoided. Hannah Stiles slotted the three pointer to take the score up to 27 – 10.

The final score of the day was the result of some sheer determination from hooker Hannah Stephens who was on permit from Tumble Ladies as she showed some good power to driver her way over the line. Stiles slotted the extras again to make the final score Burry Port Lady Blacks 34 – 10 Bonymaen

The Lady Blacks now know that a victory over Ynysybwl on the 6th of May at the memorial park will clinch them the division 1 B title, but before then have a massive WRU Supercup quarter final game on Sunday 29th of April which is also at the memorial park as they welcome Premiership side Llandaff North. As always your support is very much appreciated by the girls.
