On a glorious Autumn day with near perfect conditions for rugby both Burry Port and Visitors Mumbles were both confident on putting on a decent display of rugby for the supporters.
Burry Port were the ones who came flying out of the blocks, twice coming close to crossing the try line in the opening five minutes, but only had a penalty goal by Ben Williams to show for their efforts.
Burry Port continued to have the majority of possesion only for a well organised defensive effort by Mumbles to stop them in their tracks. Burry Port were guilty of playing too much rugby in their own half and Mumbles were capitalising on every mistake. After a turn over on the half way line Mumbles broke into Burry Port's 22 and after a Burry Port infringement a quick tap penalty seen them crash over under the posts 3-7.
With Burry Port continuing to play in the wrong areas it wasn't long before another error lead to a turn over and Mumbles were able to capitalise again to take a well earned try to make it 3-14 and quickly followed by long range penalty effort to make it 3-17 against the run of play. Burry Port were in a bit of disbelief being 14 points down and as half time approached were desperate to close the gap, again they tried attacking from the half way line only to see a long pass intercepted and Mumbles race under the posts from 50metres to go into half time 3-24.
Second half started with Burry Port changing tactics with both Half Backs playing for more territory and pinning Mumbles back into their own half. Burry Port continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with a well taken try from blind side Richard Parker and converted by Williams to make it 10-24. Soon after Mumbles were reduced to 14 after receiving a yellow card and Burry Port sensed they could get back into the game. The next score came after several powerful bursts into the Mumbles defence and with quick ball spread to wing Tom Bowen who waltzed over the try line and under the posts for a well taken try 17-24. Now Burry Port were well into the game and continued to throw everything at the visitors trying to level up the score board but Mumbles defence held tight repelling attack after attack. Burry Port had their chances to draw level failing with three or four 5 metre driving lineout attempts and making crucial errors with the try line begging. Credit has to go to the Mumbles defence effort who weathered the come back and held on for a 17-24 victory!
Burry Port coaches were disappointed with the first half display, but were proud of the way the boys responded in the second half and can count themselves unlucky not to get the draw in the end. Burry Port now see a break in league action until they host Carmarthen Athletic on 24th November however, in the meantime we'll get back on the training field and work on the areas that need improving and will have a chance to get some much needed game time when we host Brawdy RFC in our Annual Remembrance Match 10th November before a tough Christmas run in.
