1sts V Pontyberem

After an exciting preseason the 1st team travelled to Pontyberem for the opening fixture of Division 2 west, the home team have recruited well and are fancied to do well this season, so it was no surprise when they raced out of the blocks to score an early try and take control in the opening exchanges.

However Burry Port were up for the challenge and looked dangerous every time they had the ball and scoring a try through Stef Powell with their 1st attack. Both teams were intent to playing open rugby and the crowd was truely entertained througout.

Burry Port went on to lead 10-13 after a Pontyberem Penalty and 2 from Burry Port Fullback Gareth Rees but then the home team had a good period of sustained pressure to get another couple of penalties and a well worked try to lead 23-10. The boot of Gareth Rees kept the Blacks in the game and an excellent period of play by Burry Port ended with hooker Iwan Roberts crossing under the posts to bring the game level at 23- 23 with less then 10 mins to play.

But from the restart a mistake from Burry Port lead to an easy pen kick for Pontyberem to retake the lead 26-23 and again straight from the kick off another mistake and a missed tackle let the home team race up field to extend the lead to 31-23, the final minutes seen Burry Port doing all they could to get back into the game and an attack up field secured a penalty which Gareth Rees put over (31-26) to set up a tense finish.

Burry Port went on the attack from the restart looking for the winning score but ultimately a last error lead to the ball being turned over and from the last play Pontyberem managed to score the final try to end with a very good victory. 38-26

The Burry Port Players would be very disappointed to not come away with anything from the game but also pleased with some of the rugby they managed to put together and are already looking forward to the game V Loughour next week at Home.
