Tylorstown 0-34 Burry Port
Burry Port progressed through to the last 16 of the Bowl with a workmanlike performance away to Tylorstown. In difficult conditions the home team started strongly and held territorial advantage for much of the opening 10 minutes, but the Blacks cleared the line and started to control the breakdown area that was crucial with a slippery ball. The driving rain limited an expansive game, and Burry Port’s first try came from a well worked driving line-out and Number 8 Dylan Evans crashed over with Ben Williams adding a conversion. A good period of play saw the hosts struggle to contain Burry Port, who were cheered on by a large travelling contingent, and Burry Port were on top and came close to scoring a number of times. The penalty count was in Burry Port’s favour as Tylorstown were infringing at the breakdown and scrum half Ben Williams slotted over a penalty to increase the lead. Both teams tried hard to play exciting rugby and there were good handling skills on show with Iwan Roberts finishing off another try close to the corner, with Williams adding the extras. With conditions deteriorating the early second half exchanges were even with the hosts getting stuck in at the contact area. Burry Port broke from deep and produced a fine handling move that resulted in winger Luke Rudall scoring in the corner. Williams converted from the touchline. The game continued with Burry Port playing a high tempo game that took its toll on the home defence. Captain Dan Etteridge controlled possession well and mixed his tactics keeping the home defence guessing and produced two fine cross kicks to set up the next two tries, for Owen Thomas and Rhys Gravell. The five try victory was pleasing to see as the squad gave a fine performance in awful conditions and with competition for places increasing, it promises to be an exciting season ahead in Cup and League competitions. Credit must also be given to the travelling supporters who made the journey, and it was pleasing that the players responded well in giving them plenty to cheer about. Burry Port host New Dock Stars in the league next Saturday, 17th December, kick off 2.30 at the Memorial Park. There is also a former players reunion at the clubhouse so it promises to be another eventful day for Burry Port RFC. All former players are welcome to attend.
