With the awful conditions the game was moved from Nelson to Merthyr 4G pitch, and with Burry Port missing a host of players and some very late withdrawals meaning they only had 13 players available it was always going to be a tough ask against a good Nelson outfit.
The 1st half Burry Port played into the wind and found themselves camped in their ownhalf for long periods but still looked dangerous when running from deep, Captain Catrina Bowen led by example and a break from her own 10m line seen her race clear only to be caught inches from the line but quick ruck ball led to scrum half Keely Evans darting over to take the lead.
Nelson were playing some good stuff themselves, they had some lively backs and a good driving maul which they used to good effect and it was from some sustained pressure that they got their 1st try to level things up.
The next try also went to the Home team, after a good kick to the corner sent Burry Port scrambling back to cover but a mistake and knock on led to the Nelson winger picking up and dabbing over the line to take a 10-5 lead.
Burry Port continued to play a high tempo game and with a quick tap penalty and some great handling were able to send flying centre Laura Thomas over the tryline for a well taken try to level the game at half time 10-10.
With Burry Port playing with the elements in the 2nd half they managed to play most of the game within Nelsons half, and with good defence managed to force errors from the home team.
Nelson had a big bench and with the rolling subs rule were making lots of changes whereas the Burry Port girls just had to dig in and go the full 80 minutes, and to their credit thats exactly what they did. The next score came from a scrum on the halfway line and with a show and go from outside half Rhian Jenkins and with the pace to go all the way crossed the line under the posts to take the lead 10-17.
Nelson were still in the game and were forcing Burry Port to conceed penalties and with the ref losing patience they were reduced to 12 and soon after lost another player to go down to 11. Nelson sniffed blood and went on an all out attack, some good play got them into Burrys 22 but after a great turnover centre Mari Jenkins got the ball and raced a full 80 meters and just managed to evade the covering defence to cross in the corner. 22-10.
Nelson still would have thought there was time to get back in the game and gave everything they had but the Burry Port defence held firm with all the players putting in a massive effort and that effort got its reward as in the final minute of the game they got another try from Mari Jenkins who powered her way over the line under the posts to secure a well deserved bonus point win for the Lady Blacks.
