On a day that saw horrific conditions, many were surprised to find out that the lady blacks home fixture against Bonymaen went ahead. Both sides were determined to play and it made for an exciting game of rugby.
The match started with the home team keeping hold of the ball and working their way up field slowly but surely, and were camped in the Bonymaen half for long periods of time, but more often than not, the poor weather conditions led to the ball being spilled, which left Bonymaen off the hook on several occasions.
The first score of the game went to Bonymaen, after some hard work getting themselves into the Burry Port half. Some quick passing saw their winger race in at the corner, which was also converted to make the score at half time Burry Port 0 – 7 Bonymaen.
After the break, the weather conditions went from bad to worse, and the crowd that gathered were sometimes unable to tell who was who on the field. Both teams fought hard at the breakdown to win the ball and for a long period the game was a true midfield battle. Bonymaen showed some good skills which saw their centre break a tackle and race over the line. The conversion went wide on this occasion.
In the last 15 minutes of the game, the lady blacks were determined to get something for themselves and came close to scoring on a number of occasions, but yet again, the bar of soap of a ball was spilled to cost them, and allow the visitors to escape.
Eventually, Burry Port scrum half Keely Evans showed her experience when awarded with a penalty ten yards out, as she went quickly and dived over the line. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, and the full-time score of Burry Port 5 – 12 Bonymaen means that the ladies walk away with a losing bonus point.
It was pleasing to see that despite the conditions, the ladies worked extremely hard to play the way they always do and always looked to spread the ball wide, as well as take it up the middle through some hard running.
The ladies next fixture is away to Taffs Well on Sunday 5th February with an early kick off time at 11.30AM, giving them enough time to watch the Italy V Wales game afterwards. There are spaces on the bus for anyone who would like to come up and support. Please let one of the ladies team coaches know if you would like to book seats.
