Welsh Bowl 1/4 Final Burry Port V Senghenydd

With the atrocious weather over the weekend it was surprising the game went ahead but considering the conditions it was a proper good old cup tie with some great play from both sides.

The newly formed Burry Port team welcomed Division 2 side Senghenydd to the Memorial Park in what many believed was going to be a hugely one sided contest, but to Burry Ports credit it was anything but.

The home side started the stronger and surprised the visitors by keeping the ball for long periods and even though Burry Port were reduced to 14 players( no subs available)  after only 5 minutes were much the better team and after a series of penalties in the away teams 22 the ball was spread wide with some great off loads by the back line to send winger Jenna Marshall in for the 1st score of the day and a well deserved lead. Senghenydd started to come more and more into the game but it was still Burry Port on top even though the Visitors managed to score two tries both resulting from breaks by the number 10 who had a fine afternoon and would became the difference between the both sides. The rest of the 1st half was a right old tussle with Amber Phillips and Kelly Gravell leading the way in defense with some massive hits. As the 1st half drew to a close Burry Port finished strongly with a good passage of play which was superbly finished off by Alana Bothwick.

Half Time score Burry Port 10 Senghenydd 10

The 2nd half started with Senghenydd upping thier game and putting Burry Port under some pressure and even though the Blacks defended excellently could not hold out and conceded a try under the posts, and with the away team backs having a bit more ball ran in another try after a missed tackle to lead 10 -24... with many supporters fearing the flood gates were about to open Burry Port regrouped and along with several others Captain LLinos Rees and excellent Centre Catrina Bowen again took the game to the Visitors and they were rewarded in another fine try by outside half Dionne Evasaon. Score 15 - 24. The next 10 minutes saw Burry Port trying to reduce the lead only to be stopped by some stern defense and with the game in the balance and with the Home 14 players starting to tire in the last 10 minutes, Senghenydd were able to make some changes and bring on some much needed fresh legs which resulted in some well taken tries to pull away from a brave Burry Port team who didn't have much left in the tank.

The Final Score 15 - 41 was quite harsh and didn't reflect the effort the 14 Girls put in all afternoon against a very good experienced outfit Senghenydd. The Girls should be really proud of the performance and it will give some confidence ready for when they enter league rugby next season.

The future looks bright for Ladies rugby in Burry Port..... Well done Girls......
