1st XV v Aberaeron Match Report

Match Report: Burry Port 28 – 13 Aberaeron. The Memorial Park was the scene for an exciting match with the Blacks gaining a last minute score to get a hard earned winning bonus point against a though Aberaeron outfit. Number 8 Llyr Sims opened the scoring with a well taken try and this was soon followed by a penalty by Ben Williams. The Blacks gained the upper hand with possession and territory but it was Aberaeron who finished the first half with a period of pressure that r...esulted in converted try when the Blacks couldn’t clear their line. HT Burry Port 8-7 Aberaeron. With both teams trying to play open rugby, it became a stop-start affair with the whistle dominating and frustration from both teams was starting to show. Aberaeron were next to score after a penalty on the half way line and went ahead 8 – 10. A good period saw the Blacks having continuity and build the phases and a penalty was awarded and Williams kicked Burry Port ahead 11 – 10. With the pack going well it was Llyr Sims who scored again after another forward effort to make it 16 – 10 but Aberaeron slotted over another penalty to make it 16 -13. A period of open play saw many chances created out wide and with men spare the home steam quandered a few clear cut opportunities much to the frustration of the sizable crowd. With time running out the Blacks were camped in the Aberaeron 22 and it was a catch and drive from the line out that saw Llyr Sims grab a hat-trick. The last period saw Aberaeron’s defence clinging on and a powerful drive up-field resulted in Prop Chris Mills crashing over for Burry Port’s 4th try that secured the winning bonus point. Stef Powell slotted over the conversion to end a thrilling match 28 – 13.
This win lifts Burry Port into 3rd position in the league with main rivals Lampeter and Tumble winning without a bonus point, it was a good result for Burry Port and that last period of possession and try could be crucial come the end of the season. The run in to the end of season will be hectic as there are so many fixtures to be rearranged but our title hopes are still alive, and Coach Gareth Gravell has called for a massive effort from his squad to finish the season strongly both in league and cup. With the Development XV beating Pantyffynnon by 6 tries in the Semi Final of the West Wales Plate, and the Youth team winning a league match away at Kidwelly, it was three 3 out of 3 for Burry Port RFC. Well done boys!
