Match report- Pembroke v Burry Port

Another long away trip resulted in another well deversed win for the Blacks.

Playing into a strong wind in the first half the Blacks were under the "cosh" from a detemind effort by the home team and had it not been for some excellent defence could have been ahead by a couple of scores.

Both teams struggled with the elements at times and the only try of the 1st half went to Pembroke and with the succsessful conversion and a well struck penalty led 10-0. Burry Port showed plenty of effort to get the score but were probably guilty of trying to play a bit to much rugby and found themselves defending for long periods but were able to see the Halftime whistle blow only 10 points down.

Playing with the elements in the 2nd half Burry Port got off to a dream start after securing the ball from the restart and gaining good field postion went through the phases to send Hooker Iwan Roberts dancing over the tryline to score under the posts. succsessful conversion by Ben Williams 10-7.

Pembroke hit back almost immeditely with a penalty to extend the led to 13-7. However Burry Port started to get some good phases of play together and with the wind on their backs managed to apply plenty of pressure on the Home team and came close to scoring a try but had to settle for a penalty to reduce the led to 13-10.

The game was beginning to became a tight affair with the Home pack edging the scrum battle making to difficult for the Blacks to play and Burry Port had to rely on No.8 and captain for the day Dylan Evans to get back on the front foot.

The next score would surely prove crucial and with both teams pushing themselves to the limit it was Burry Port who managed to get over the whitewash with Full back Stef Powell crashing over in the corner to take the led for the first time. 13 - 15.

Now the Blacks were on the verge of another successsful away trip in the space of two weeks but Pembroke were going to make them work for it. The home team upped the anti and with Burry port failing to clear their lines on a number of occassions Pembroke battered the Burry Port tryline. The Defensive effort by the Blacks can not be over stated, it was truely a fantastic effort with some breathtaking tackles to hold Pembroke out. Time and time again they repelled the attack and also had to keep their discipline as a penalty would have also been enough for the Home team and thats exactly what they did to secure a well deserved away win against a very decent Pembroke team who will be difficult to beat at home this season.

The Burry Port Players, Coaches and supporters were thrilled with the victory and now look forward to the WRU Plate 1st Rd game next week at Home v Pontarddulais.
