Burry topple last seasons Champions

Burry Port welcomed Lampeter to Memorial Park for a league challenge against last seasons Champions.

Burry elected to receive the kick off ball and also to play into the light wind during the first half.

A poor Lampeter kick off was challenged for and won by Burry who set up an attack from their own half. Accurate handling led to a lovely line break by fullback Tomos Davies, to run in under the Lampeter posts to open the scoring.

He then duly converted his own try.

This early score seemed to liven up the Burry players, who then set about to play a strong attack and defence game with Lampeter between each others 22m, with neither side able to break the deadlock.

Eventually, it was broken when Lampeter were penalised at the breakdown and up stepped Burry’s Tomos Davies to aim at the posts, which he duly split for a further three points.

Lampeter did break out into Burry’s 22m from the kick off but failed to capitalize on the penalty received, following their good forward work.

The ensuing penalty kick just clipped past the outside upright.

Burry gathered some momentum after this error, and finally worked out that Lampeter had a very strong and organized defence, so this could only be broken by committing to a few more forward breaks and sucking in the wide out defence.

From a 10m scrum, No.8 Kingsley Powell picked and passed through the scrum half Kalam Davies to centre Olly Davies, who cut a lovely arcing run to break the defence and then outpace the Lampeter full back for a lovely try.

Tomos Davies stepped up to convert the score.

Lampeter recognized their strength being forward orientated, and so from a break up field which the Burry scramble defence managed to clear, the ball was put into touch on their 22m line.

Fine lineout catch and drive led Lampeter to the Burry 5m line where sterling defense kept them out at the cost of a penalty.

Electing to run at the Burry try line, it took an almighty crush tackle from 2nd row Rhys Williams to stop the Lampeter charger in his tracks, and allowed Burry to regather the ball and clear their line.

A further Burry try was scored wide out by livewire flanker Steff Collins , to ensure that Lampeter had a mammoth task to rise to in the second half.

The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Burry sustituted several players @ half time, which was appropriate at the game stage and present scoreline.

Sustained pressure for the first 5 minutes saw Burry camped in the Lampeter half with wave after wave of attacking play battering the Lampeter try line.

One such attack saw speedy full back Tomos Davies break into the back line and took his opposite number on the outside for pace, to score a text book training field move.

Again, he successfully converted his own try for a further two points.

Although Lampeter showed resilient defense, Burry were now fully in control and passed the ball freely, demonstrating their confidence and commanding lead.

Not content with allowing the backs to have it all their own way, Burry forwards collected a 15m lineout to drive towards the Lampeter tryline.

Secure handling saw a deft pass slipped out to Keaten Evans, who powered his way over the try line, taking 2 defending Lampeter players in his path.

Surprisingly, the conversion was hooked to the side of the upright on this occasion.

Demoralised by the one sidedness of the second half, frustration got the better of Lampeter who lost their self control and were duly penalised  with the referee showing their outside half a yellow card for decent at the breakdown.

Reduced to 14 players, the Lampeter task was significantly made more difficult and Burry took up the attacking reins once more, with the forwards and backs interlinking to display some champagne rugby before flanker Steff Collins popped up out wide to round the last Lampeter defender and score a lovely team try.

The conversion was just short but this last play emphasized the difference between the two side during this seasons encounter.

A thoroughly entertaining game for the sizeable crowd to watch, with the scoreline belying what was often, an equal challenge in many areas for both side.

This level of game physicality was the preparation needed for Burry’s next challenge , away from league encounters and into the National Youth Cup competition against last years Cup finalists, Pontardulais.
