Impressive season opener for Youth

On an overcast autumn afternoon, Burry Port took the short journey to Abergwili, to challenge the Quins in their 1st league match of the season.

Testiment to the ongoing talent stream emerging from our Junior section, Burry named 10 first year Youth players in the days 22 man squad.

From the kickoff, it was Quins who made the early running, with several attacking plays into Burry’s half.

However, solid defense held then out at each attempt and with a defensive turnover in our own 22m area, the ball was spread wide by Burry and impressive passing interplay resulted in a score wide out for captain Olly Davies, converted by Tomos Davies.

Quins reacted positively to this early set back, and after several forward driving phases, entered the Burry half and secured a penalty kick at goal, which was successfully converted.

Burry were now spurred onwards, and led by Olly Davies, aimed to tear into the opposition at every opportunity.

Playing some delightful phase rugby, the players grew as the half progressed, with both scrum and lineout ball seeming in abundance.

When available, the ball was sent wide at almost every opportunity, which allowed maximum viewing enjoyment for the supporting crowd.

The half drew to a close with several further breaks from within the Burry 22m area which resulted in 2 converted tries for Tomos Davies.

With a comfortable lead achieved by half time, this allowed the coaches an opportunity to make several early replacements for Burry.

Remarkably, none of these changes seemed to reduce the effectiveness of the Burry pressure play, with both forwards and backs wanting to get in on the action.

Slow reactions did allow the Quins to claim an unconverted try from some slack defense from the kickoff, but Burry soon recovered.

Play moved swiftly up the the Quins 22m, where a resulting lineout was cleanly taken by Kingsley Powell, and the supporting forwards packed down and drove forward fully to the try line, wide out.

The try was claimed by Olly Davies, who else.

Following this try, the flood gates opened and Burry created several further scoring opportunities,.

With some excellent running lines & handling off loads, 4 further tries were run in by Callum White (2), Ryan Richards (1) and Kynan Jones (1).

On the face of this display, Burry have set themselves a high standard to challenge for each and every future game this season.

The game also enabled the coaching staff to ‘run the rule’ over several of the talented first year Youth players who have come through from last season’s successful U16’s age group.
