Burry Port power to victory

Burry Port move up the table with emphatic 10 try win. The Blacks game with Penygroes went ahead despite the adverse weather conditions earlier in the day and the pitch held up well and allowed a fast and open game. The opening exchanges were competitive with Burry Port looking sharp. A few chances were halted by the Penygroes defence, but it took a good drive up-field followed by a slick inside pass from Ben Williams to find lock Bryn Jenkins to go under the posts. Ben Williams converted to make it 7-0. The second try was soon to follow and after a good catch and drive from a line out Penygroes were penalised close to their line and from the next play Hooker Iwan Roberts took a short pass and ran a clever line and powered over close to the posts. Williams converted to make it 14-0. The next try was a long range effort with flanker Tom Rees making a clean break up-field and showed his pace to race away drawing the defender he found Stef Powell who took the ball forward and found speedy wing Adam Davies who finished off a cracking try in the corner. Williams added the conversion from the touchline to make it 21-0. An individual try was to follow when Captain Andy Francis took the ball on the half-way line and made an outside break followed by a well timed side-step to cross for an unconverted try out wide. Two more tried followed for Francis, when influential flanker Tom Rees cut loose again and fed his skipper to score a converted try close to the posts, and for his hat-trick Centre Duane Evans was the provider as he made a powerful line break and found Francis who raced over in the corner for an unconverted try. HT Score Burry Port 38 - 0 Penygroes.
Penygroes who have had a challenging season so far have had to borrow players from most teams and this evening was no different, but they came back and showed some good spirit when they pressurised and crossed for an unconverted try. Burry Port hit back quickly and it was Tom Rees who showed quick thinking when he took a quick tap penalty and he powered over at short distance for an unconverted try. A longer range effort was to follow when Centre Declan Knox made a well timed break and with good precise passing found his fellow Centre Duane Evans who was not going to be stopped and he went over for Burry Port’s 8th try, and with Williams adding the extras the Blacks hit the half century 10 minutes into the second half making it 50-5. Penygroes hit back when good play from their scrum half followed by a neat short pass created an opportunity for their No 8 who crashed over for a converted try to make it 50-12. The Blacks were looking sharp and Ben Williams intercepted and shortly after Matthew Kathrines crossed for an unconverted try. The final score of the match saw Matthew Gower finishing off a good handling move to make it a ten try victory.
