Lady Blacks cruise to bowl final

On Sunday 23rd April The Lady Blacks made the short trip to Pontarddulais knowing that a win would see them through to the final of the WRU Ladies National Bowl Competition. The chance to play in the final was motivation enough for the squad as they put together one of their finest performances to date.

The start of the match saw the blacks defending their own line almost immediately from kick off. A great turnover on the floor saw the ladies mount an attack of their own and began to work their way up field and eventually centre Catrina Bowen ran a great angle to run over the line for the first score of the game, with the extras being added by Keely Evans.

Minutes later the lady blacks were on the scoresheet again as a fine piece of passing play saw winger Sam Jones race down the wing and under the posts with the conversion once again being added by scrum half Keely Evans.

A short while later the blacks enhanced the score through centre Jenna Marshall, who received the ball and powered her way through a defender and over the line. Evans slotted the extras.

Pontarddulais were determined to show some fight and got their first points of the game as the openside flanker crossed from a quick tap and go.

There were further scores for the lady blacks from centre Catrina Bowen and loosehead Kelly Gravell to take the score at half time to 33 – 7 in the blacks favour.

About two minutes in to the second half, centre Catrina Bowen bagged a hatrick for herself as she once again sliced her way through the home team defence to score under the posts, which was converted with ease once again by scrum half Evans. Shortly after Catrina Bowen proved to hard to stop once again as she crossed the line in similar fashion to take the score after the conversion to 43 – 7.

The remainder of the points came from substitutes Rhian Jenkins, Alanah Borthwick and winger Sam Jones to round off a fine display of rugby. At the final whistle there were celebrations from the lady blacks players and supporters as they knew their place in the final was booked.

FINAL SCORE: Pontarddulais 7 – 64 Burry Port

Player of the match: Sam Jones

The coaches were extremely pleased with how the squad played, in particular the handling, passing and vision of the players as well as the ever dominant scrum.

The Ladies look ahead next to the challenge of North Walians Abergele in the Bowl Final which is to be played at The Bridge Field, home of Bedwas RFC on the 20th May with a kick off at 4pm
